Angela began working part-time at Carlsbad Insurance Agency in 1989 during her Jr. year of High School. After graduating, she applied for a full-time position at CIA in the Personal Lines Department. After focusing on Personal Lines for a couple of years and ready for added challenges and new spaces to learn, she transitioned to the Commercial Lines Division as an Account Manager. Around 1997 Angela began working as an Insurance Producer, and by 2000 she had become the manager of Carlsbad Insurance.
During her time at CIA, she developed a love of teaching. For several years, she taught continuing education classes for CIA staff and licensed Western Commerce Bank’s SE NM Branches agents. She also worked alongside local Attorney Tom Martin, providing training sessions to the City of Carlsbad employees related to Employment practice law (Tom did this). Angela assisted with Employment Related Practice Insurance program overviews.
Angela developed a strong knowledge of Oil and Gas Insurance. Recognizing her expertise in the O&G Insurance space, she was asked by Mack Energy Corp. to work for them in February of 2005 as their Risk Manager. She left CIA for a short time to join the Chase team. With substantial Oil and Gas business growth on the horizon, the Chase family made an additional investment decision and purchased Carlsbad Insurance in Oct. 2005 as part of their large business portfolio. The Chase family asked Angela to manage CIA for them and continue to assist the Chase organization with their own risk management needs. Angela became minority owner and President of Carlsbad Insurance Agency in Oct. 2005.
As an investor, and because Chase’s primary focus was Oil and Gas, they gave her the freedom and flexibility to oversee the Insurance Agency entirely. With this freedom and flexibility in mind, she started changing the CIA model from a “quote” agency to successfully developing and implementing several specialized Insurance / Risk Management programs for clients. During this time, she remained on as Risk Management Advisor for the Chase entities. She assisted Chase with implementing safety programs and remained one of their management team’s trusted advisors.
In January 2013, Angela purchased the remaining shares of CIA from the Chase family. Shortly after, HUB approached Angela and asked if she would consider joining their team so they could expand their footprint into SE NM and the Oil and Gas region. Selling the agency was not an easy decision. That said, in May 2014 CIA sold to HUB. This move provided an added scope of services and support, which helped the risk management model evolve and grow.
Angela was a 2008-2009 IIANM Past Chairperson and formerly an NM Young Agents Chairperson. She was active in Rotary and a former Paul Harris Fellow award recipient for her mission work in Mexico. She currently volunteers with the Lifehouse, a sober living facility for recovering addicts. In this role, she works with Moms at Lifehouse, assisting with their professional development. She loves to cook and does so on a volunteer basis at her church monthly.
Ready for the “what’s next” in life and open to new challenges. Angela decided after 31 years, it was time to reset, and she retired from Hub Insurance.
She is thrilled for the opportunity to work with the NM Independent Insurance Agents Association team. Teaching and mentoring the next generation of insurance professionals speaks to her heart, and she is grateful for the opportunity to give back.
